Description

This Astrobin Debut Image captures several distant galaxies located about 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +30 degrees. I could not find distance estimates for the top left or bottom right galaxies, so I cannot confirm that they are formally part of this group.

The featured object here is the pair of interacting galaxies in the upper right corner. The face-on spiral is NGC 6274 and the edge-on galaxy is MCG+05-40-020. Some disturbance is seen in both galaxies, suggesting that they are close enough to be interacting. The larger galaxy is about 80,000 light years in diameter.

All of the other galaxies in the group also have interesting structures – the barred ring spiral at upper left, the distorted edge-on spiral at lower left, and the spiral galaxy with looping star streams at lower right.
